Merrill businessman bringing new truck stop to TomahawkSubmitted: 10/17/2013

MERRILL - Losing a business can be tough.

But turning that loss into a new business that benefits an entire city makes up for it.

Merrill business owner Raj Bhandari knew that a new overpass would take customers away from his gas station.

And that's exactly what happened.

Raj filed a federal lawsuit because he feels the new overpass was illegal.

"It was a federally funded project and they didn't follow federal rules," says Bhandari.

So, Raj bought a 38-acre property along Highway 51 and A in Tomahawk. He wants to put a truck stop there.

The truck stop would bring a lot of business to the area.

"Diesel for truckers, showers for truckers. Some retail stores. And convenience items because there's some housing there also," says Bhandari.

That means he'll be able to hire more people. And hopefully help bring more people into Tomahawk.

Mike Tolvstad is the Tomahawk public works director. He says the city is excited about the truck stop.

"Anytime that you can bring business that could potentially bring other commercial and residential development, it's exciting." says Tolvstad. "It's always important for the city."

The zoning for the truck stop has already started. Raj hopes he'll be open by spring.
