RHINELANDER - The School District of Rhinelander will now run the Aspirus Community Fitness Center.

The school district held its grand opening Monday.

The center has been open for two years now, but it was the YMCA of the Northwoods, not the school district, that ran it.

"We had a three-year contract with [the] YMCA. We were year number two with the YMCA. And that contract was terminated effective August 18," says Director of Business Services Marta Kwiatkowski. "Aspirus has donated money. Therefore, their name is on the wall and you know they have the naming rights for the fitness center."

During the school year, the fitness center is open before and after school Monday through Friday. They also have hours on Saturday morning.

School leaders think the center has a lot to offer the community.

"I think we're really unique, and no other place in town can offer what we offer. We have trained fitness coaches on staff to be able to help people with equipment and exercise routine," says Kwiatkowski. "We're going to have [a] personal trainer on staff and athletic trainer. There's no other gym in town that has an athletic trainer."

It costs $15 a month for one person to use the fitness center. It costs $25 a month for a family to sign up.

LAND O' LAKES - The Phelps community came together Saturday to turn tragedy into something positive.

"Mrs. Johnson was always one of our favorite teachers, you could go to her about anything like troubles at home or bullying, and she'd always be there for us so it's really nice to give back to her," said Phelps 8th grader Alexandria Myszka.

Kim Johnson works as the music teacher at Phelps Middle School. After her husband D.J. was hurt in an accident last month, he's now paralyzed from the waist down.

But the community decided to help the family.

"Originally, this was our 8th grade class fundraiser, but after we heard about Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, we decided to donate all of the proceeds to them," said Myszka.

The Phelps 8th graders hosted a breakfast fundraiser at The Sunrise Lodge in Land O' Lakes. More than 300 people came out in support.
